Budgeting Tips for Your Holiday Shopping

The economy has forced many people to tighten their budget because of a career change or job loss. Finding ways to save money on holiday shopping and gift giving can help reduce stress and financial hardship.

The Season of Gift Giving

Christmas is the season of gift giving. The holiday season often creates an atmosphere of giving far beyond what many people can afford. Without establishing a budget or spending plan, it’s easy to overspend and this can create financial hardship and all the stress that comes along with it.

Budgeting Tips

The holiday season doesn’t have to cost a fortune. There are many ways to save money. The best way to begin is to set up a budget or spending plan. When setting up a budget, factor in any career change or major purchase (such as a new car, etc.) that will impact your available cash.

Here’s some other budgeting tips for the holiday shopping season:

  1. Make a list before you head out to the mall.
  2. Set a limit for each person on your list.
  3. Try to avoid using credit cards.
  4. Remember to include the extra costs incurred during the holidays, such as traveling, additional food, etc.

Holiday Shopping

It is important to set limits. One of the key problems with holiday shopping is that many people never create any kind of spending limit. It’s even better if you have an idea of what to get the people on your list and then stick to it. Otherwise, you’ll be wondering aimlessly through the store making impulse purchases. Once the spending begins, it’s easy to get caught up in an atmosphere of overspending.

While it’s always easier to avoid the problem of overspending with a budget, it can be difficult to stick to your spending plan especially when you’re in the midst of the holiday season or if you have limited time to complete your holiday shopping. It helps if you recognize that overspending in one area means that you’ll have to cut costs in another. Check your list and the limit you set for each person and consider changing the amount of a gift if your budget is looking tight.

Ways to Save Money

Check newspapers for flyers and the Internet for coupons. They are everywhere and you can find coupon codes for just about anything these days.

retailmenot couponcabinRetailMeNot.com and CouponCabin.com are two popular Websites.

Keep track of your spending as you shop. Use cash for your purchases. Try to avoid using credit cards. Credit cards are the easiest way to blow your budget. When you use credit cards, it doesn’t feel as though you are spending a lot of money since nothing is coming out of your pocket or bank account – at least not until you get your statement. Spending with credit makes it easy to spend a lot more than you can afford and this can create financial hardship long after the holidays are over.

Instead of using credit cards for holiday spending, use cash or a debit card. This way, you’ll know how much you’ve spent and how much money you have left.

Setting up a budget or spending plan is the best way to avoid overspending and financial hardship after the holidays are over. When setting up your budget, don’t forget to account for ancillary holiday expenses such as traveling, additional food and baking items, higher utility expenses after the holidays, Christmas Cards, postage, a fresh cut tree and miscellaneous holiday decorations.

Happy Holidays!
